About

Sıfır Bir – Bir Zamanlar Adana'da (2016) is a Turkish crime drama directed by Kadri Beran Taşkın, shot entirely in Adana and named after the city's licence plate code. It follows Savaş, Cio, and Özgür — three young men from the Hürriyet neighbourhood — as they wage a war they can't win against drugs, the local gangs, and the mafia above them. Six seasons and forty-three episodes across 2016–2019, with a feature film following in 2020.

Its origin story is half the point: the show started as a YouTube series made by people from the neighbourhood it depicts, with no network, no studio, and no permission, and it built an audience large enough that BluTV picked it up from the third season on. It has since landed on HBO Max in Turkey.

Why It Works

Almost nothing on Turkish television looks or sounds like this. The dialect is real Adana, not a studio approximation of it; the streets are the actual streets; the cast are largely locals rather than İstanbul-trained actors, and Savaş Satış and Cihangir Ceyhan carry the whole thing with a kind of unpolished conviction you cannot cast for. The violence is neither stylish nor cathartic — it's sudden, ugly, and mostly pointless, which is exactly the correct choice for a story about young men who have confused loyalty with a life plan.

What elevates it above a straightforward street-crime series is that it takes the code seriously enough to show what the code costs. Every act of loyalty in Sıfır Bir creates the next funeral. The characters know this, say it out loud, and do it anyway, because the alternative — walking away from your friends — is the one thing the world they live in has never given them a script for.

The Theme

Brotherhood as both the only thing worth having and the mechanism of your destruction. The show never romanticises the neighbourhood and never condescends to it either; it simply insists that these lives are worth the running time, told in their own accent, by the people who live them. That it did this from YouTube, on nothing, and forced the industry to come to it, is the other reason it matters.
