About

Book One: The Perennial Child (2019) is the first season of Owen Dennis's anthology, ten eleven-minute episodes aired across a single week. Tulip Olsen runs away from home over a divorce and a missed game design camp, and ends up on a train whose carriages are each their own world — a desert of corgis, a car made of tapes, a beach that is also a memory. A number glows on her hand and moves with how honestly she is dealing with herself.

What Works, and What Does Not

The premise is close to perfect: a machine that will not let you off until you have done the emotional work, with each car an externalised piece of it. One-One is a genuinely strange creation, and the ending refuses the easy version.

But at ten short episodes it moves too fast to sit in anything. Cars that deserve an act get four minutes, the rules arrive as exposition rather than discovery, and Tulip's turn lands a beat before it is earned. It is a very good idea slightly outrunning its runtime.

3/5. Worth the two hours. The concept is stronger than this first pass at it.
