The intricate plot revolves around Slevin Kelevra (Josh Hartnett), a man who arrives in New York City to stay with his friend Nick Fisher, only to find himself embroiled in a deadly gang war. Mistaken for Nick, Slevin is forced by "The Boss" (Morgan Freeman) to assassinate the son of his rival, "The Rabbi" (Ben Kingsley), to settle a gambling debt.
Adding to the complexity, Slevin is also being hunted by a legendary assassin known as Goodkat (Bruce Willis), who operates under his own mysterious agenda, and is being observed by Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci). The film is characterized by its labyrinthine plot filled with twists and turns, sharp and witty dialogue, stylish cinematography, and a dark comedic sensibility. It explores themes of identity, revenge, luck, and the intricate connections between seemingly disparate events.
