Far Cry Primal takes the established Far Cry open-world checklist and transplants it into the prehistoric valley of Oros (10,000 BCE). While the Stone Age concept is an interesting departure on paper, the execution falls completely flat.
Why It Falls Short
- Unsatisfying, Clunky Combat: Stripping away guns leaves you with bows, clubs, and throwing spears. Instead of feeling visceral or intense, the melee combat feels floaty, unresponsive, and lacking in weight or tactical feedback.
- Tedious Resource Grinding: The loop leans heavily into endless material gathering and outpost clearing. Gathering wood, flint, and animal skins to upgrade huts feels like pure chore-work rather than meaningful survival.
- Repetitive Loop & Shallow AI: Beast taming is novel for the first hour, but quickly trivializes gameplay—commanding an oversized predator to clear camps removes what little tension existed.
- Lifeless Progression: The narrative, fictional proto-language, and repetitive tribal skirmishes fail to offer memorable character moments or compelling stakes.
Verdict
It is simply not a good game. The moment-to-moment mechanics do not feel good to play, leaving a hollow, sluggish open-world formula without the mechanical satisfaction to back it up.
