14FRAME RATE AS STYLE

Animating on twos and threes on purpose, so the image stutters with intent instead of gliding

WHAT IT IS

Choosing how many frames each drawing is held for. Animating on ones gives twenty-four drawings a second and reads as smooth; on twos gives twelve and reads as snappier and more deliberate; on threes slows further. For decades this was a budget decision disguised as a style. Recently it became a genuine authorial choice, with films mixing cadences inside a single shot so that different characters move at different rates in the same frame.

WHO REACHES FOR IT

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the pivot: Miles animates on twos while more experienced characters animate on ones, so his growing competence is literally a frame-rate change. Japanese production has always treated limited animation as expressive rather than cheap, visible in Lupin III The First and across the Halo Legends anthology. The direct-to-video DC features work the same constraint from the other direction, choosing where to spend their drawings.

TRIVIA

The Spider-Verse crew reportedly had to talk animators out of decades of training, because everything in the pipeline and every instinct pushed toward smoothness. The film also layered hand-drawn marks, chromatic aberration and printed halftone over CG geometry, chasing the look of cheap comics reproduction with extremely expensive tools.

WHAT IT DOES TO YOU

Smoothness reads as realism and stutter reads as drawing, so cadence tells an audience how literally to take what they are seeing. The mixed approach is sharper still: when one character in a shot moves on twos and another on ones, you feel the difference between them without being able to name it, which is close to the ideal state for any technique.

HOW IT IS DONE

A pipeline that allows per-character cadence rather than a single global setting, plus compositing capable of the print artefacts that sell the style. The cost is not in the drawing, it is in building a system flexible enough to break its own rules per shot.

WHAT IT COSTS

Animating on twos halves the drawing count, which is why it began as economics. Doing it deliberately in a modern CG pipeline costs more, not less, because the tools default to smooth and every deviation is manual. Television-scale productions still use it the old way, and the difference between the two is usually visible in whether the choice is consistent.
