WHAT IT IS / WHEN
Rap localised faster than almost any other music. France built the second-largest rap market in the world; Germany's scene grew out of Turkish and Arab immigrant neighbourhoods; Poland developed a dense lyrical tradition largely unknown abroad; Korea industrialised it. Each had to solve the same technical problem — how a language with the wrong stress pattern sits on an English-derived rhythmic grid.

TRIVIA
KNEECAP rap mostly in Irish, a language with roughly 70,000 daily speakers, and became the subject of a BAFTA-winning feature film about themselves in 2024 — they were also refused UK arts funding, sued, and won. Eko Fresh and Sido both came out of the Aggro Berlin scene, where German rap first found a register that was not an imitation of American cadence.
SONIC SIGNATURE
Beats are largely imported — boom bap in the 1990s, trap after 2015 — but the vocal rhythm differs audibly, because syllable-timed languages like French and Polish distribute stress evenly where English clusters it. French rap tends toward dense, fast, evenly-spaced delivery; German toward hard consonantal emphasis on the downbeat; Korean exploits its syllable-final consonants for percussive effect.
KEY GEAR
Whatever the local scene could afford, which for most of the 1990s meant Ensoniq and Akai hardware and, since 2010, FL Studio almost universally. The distinguishing production element is usually the sample source: Turkish and Arab records in Germany, chanson and North African music in France, jazz and film music in Poland.
RATIONALE & PRODUCTION
Vocals are mixed further forward than in American rap, because the audience is following dense wordplay in its own language rather than a hook. Most scenes release single-first to YouTube, and mixes are optimised for phone speakers. Translation is rarely attempted — these records travel by diaspora and algorithm rather than by export.
