WHAT IT IS / WHEN

Jaco Pastorius established in 1976 that the electric bass could be a lead voice; Michael Manring, Stuart Hamm and Victor Wooten built the solo repertoire that followed. The modern strand — where Aram Bedrosian works — combines two-handed tapping, harmonics, percussive body hits and live looping so that one player produces a full arrangement in real time, usually with no overdubs.

SIGNIFICANT ARTISTS

Jaco Pastorius, Michael Manring, Victor Wooten, Stuart Hamm, Steve Lawson, Adam Ben Ezra, Aram Bedrosian. The technique overlaps heavily with solo acoustic guitarists like Michael Hedges and Andy McKee.

TRIVIA

Michael Manring plays a custom Zon Hyperbass with detuners on every string and at the bridge, letting him retune mid-phrase — a single piece of gear that opened an entire compositional space. The genre's central constraint is also its appeal: because it is nearly always performed live in one take, the recordings document a physical feat as much as a composition.

SONIC SIGNATURE

Enormous fundamental in the 40–80 Hz range coexisting with harmonics up past 4 kHz, because the same instrument is playing bass line, chord and melody simultaneously. Natural harmonics ring long against fretted notes; the body of the instrument is struck for percussion. Very little processing — the interest is in the transient detail and the decay.

KEY GEAR

Fretless and extended-range basses (five and six string), Zon and custom luthier instruments, piezo bridge pickups blended with magnetic ones for acoustic detail, and looping pedals for real-time layering. Amplification is usually full-range/flat rather than a bass amp, because the treble content matters as much as the low end.

RATIONALE & PRODUCTION

Recorded with the widest possible dynamic range and almost no compression — compression would flatten the difference between a tapped harmonic and a struck body, which is where the music lives. Usually a blend of DI, piezo and a room mic on the instrument itself. This is one of the few genres where the mastering brief is essentially "don't."
