WHAT IT IS / WHEN
The British music press coined "shoegazing" as an insult — the bands stared at their effects pedals instead of the audience — and the label stuck to a scene built on My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride. The defining record, Loveless (1991), reportedly took two years and nearly bankrupted Creation Records. The style went dormant, then returned permanently in the 2000s through M83, Beach House and a large bedroom-recording revival.

TRIVIA
Kevin Shields produced Loveless's central effect — the "glide guitar" — by holding the tremolo arm while strumming so every note bends microtonally out of tune, then layering dozens of such takes. Nothing is chorused or pitch-shifted; the shimmer is real detuning. Slowdive were savaged by the UK press in 1995, split, and reformed in 2014 to the best reviews of their career.
SONIC SIGNATURE
Guitars processed past recognition — reverse reverb, long modulated delay, octave fuzz — and mixed louder than the voice. Vocals are treated as another texture: buried, doubled, often androgynous and unintelligible. The frequency plot is unusually flat and full across the whole range, which is what makes the wall feel like a wall rather than a mix.
KEY GEAR
Fender Jazzmasters and Jaguars for the floating tremolo; the pedalboard is the instrument — Boss DD-3 and RV-3, Electro-Harmonix Big Muff and POG, Roland Space Echo, and reverse-reverb rack units. Amps are set clean and loud so the pedals do the distorting.
RATIONALE & PRODUCTION
Guitars are layered in the double figures and summed, so no individual take is audible — the point is a composite texture. Vocals are printed with reverb rather than treated later, which makes the balance irreversible and is why these records cannot be remixed convincingly. Mastering keeps the midrange dense; anything that carves space around the vocal destroys the effect.
